March 2025 - Doherty Cup Final, Here We Come!

This afternoon, the Millburn Primary School football team booked their place in this year’s Doherty Cup Final following a hugely impressive 2-0 victory over an exceptionally strong Portrush PS team. In a nervy first half, neither side created many clear openings and it can’t be argued that both defences came out on top. Newman in goals put in an assured performance throughout and dealt with all that came his way. The Millburn goalkeeper was ably assisted by a backline of Henry, Martin and Boreland who stood strong and defended bravely to keep any Portrush attacks at bay. They communicated throughout and deserve a lot of credit for their wonderful performances.
Half time: Millburn PS 0-0 Portrush PS
With the game finely poised, the Millburn team’s performance moved up a couple of gears in the second half with the pacy Dunn and Cahoon on either wing attacking with lots more intent and delivering some excellent crosses into the box. Johnston, in the middle of the park, began to show his class and dictate play and as a result the Millburn team began growing in confidence. The sustained period of Millburn pressure eventually paid off when, following exceptional work from the talented Carmichael, the dynamic McClean, who worked tirelessly throughout, hit an unstoppable drive into the roof of the net, from all of 25 yards. It was an incredible strike and no less than Millburn deserved at that stage of the game. To Portrush’s credit, they responded strongly to this setback and they pushed hard in search of an equaliser. However, with the game going into the final 10 minutes, it was Millburn who scored their second goal, courtesy of the accomplished McClean, once again. If McClean’s first goal was spectacular, then it would be difficult to find a word to summarise his second - WOW!! A goal right out of the top drawer and struck from all of 30 yards - WHAT A HIT!
Portrush finished the game strongly and a goal line clearance from Martin in the dying minutes kept Millburn’s two goal lead in tact.
McCorriston and Moffett battled hard when called upon whilst Wilson, Ramsey and Golligher all played an important role for their team throughout the day.
Full Time: Millburn 2 - 0 Portrush
Such a proud afternoon and thank you to all who came along to cheer on our boys.
We have no doubt that the Millburn PS community will come out in large numbers to show their support for this talented group on the evening of The Doherty Cup Final (date to be confirmed).
